Celestine Donkor Expresses Shock Over GHAMRO’s Failure To Assist Musicians In The COVID-19 Era

Gospel musician Celestine Donkor has expressed shock over Ghana Music Rights Organization’s failure in releasing royalties to assist musicians in this COVID-19 days.

Speaking on Ekwanso Dwoodwoo with Abeiku Santana on Okay FM, Celestine Donkor said though she hasn’t received royalties for a long time, she was shocked when GHAMRO couldn’t give any relief monies to musicians in these hard times.

“I don’t remeber the last time I received royalties from GHAMRO. And it is not as if we don’t like it. It just doesn’t come. But what really got me more worried was when we went on locked down and GHAMRO couldn’t assist musicians in any way. At a time like this, I feel it would have been good to have such an institution make musicians feel that they are truly in for their welfare” she stated.

She further admitted that though she is surprised such support didn’t come from GHAMRO, issues with royalties are getting better.

“But in all of that, I will say it is still better than what it used to be before because three, four years back there was nothing good about royalties in Ghana but at least today, musicians receive Ghc500, Ghc800 through mobile money. So it is better than five years ago. So I believe it`s a work in progress, so yeah it will be better”.
